14K vs 18K Gold: What's The Difference?

When purchasing jewelry we are faced with many questions. My goal today is to explain the difference between 14 karat and 18 karat gold. This information will help you determine the meaning of other gold karats and will answer a primary question we all ask when shopping for jewelry...What's the difference!?

KARAT

Karats can be viewed as "parts". When expressing the highest possible gold purity, we say 24 karat (24K), or 24 "parts" total which equals to 99.99% pure gold.

Out of the possible 24 parts there is a total of 14 parts of pure gold in 14 karat gold (14K) and 18 parts of pure gold in 18 karat gold (18K)

What's in the other parts?

With each type of gold (yellow, white, and rose) the metals used to complete the 24 parts will be different. Some gold will have nickel, silver, copper, zinc, or palladium added to create the final product. Each manufacturer has their own unique formula which is why we make sure to inspect each batch in search for the best gold color and ultimate quality of jewelry.

What are the benefits of purchasing one type of gold over the other?

14K gold is very durable. This benefits those who like to wear jewelry everyday. 14K is harder to scratch or bend and will stay with you for many years and possibly a lifetime of daily wear!

18K has fewer non-gold metals which benefits those with strong nickel allergies and has a slightly richer gold color.

Why not just use pure 24 karat gold in all jewelry?

By nature gold is a soft metal. If stones are set into 24K pure gold the prongs are soft and the stones can easily fall out, or if you apply light pressure the piece loses it's shape and overall structure. A few reasons why alloys are introduced to the pure gold. Both 18K and 14K are fabulous options for fine jewelry. The higher the karat, the more delicate the piece. 18K is very soft compared to 14K but is still strong and is great for jewelry that will endure less stress.
